Today we met at IMC with Dr. Rich who is the neurosurgeon whom we have been referred to for a consultation concerning a biopsy of the lesions in Eric's brain. Dr. Rich along with his nurse practitioner looked over Eric's most recent MRI with us. Dr. Rich talked through different scenarios of which lesions would be the best to access and came up with a game plan we are all comfortable with. It sounds like a pretty straight forward procedure.
Someone asked me if these new 'enhancements' in Eric's brain are tumors or lesions. I asked Dr. Rich to better help me understand the difference and he said that this biopsy will tell us. Here is a little background to answer that question:
Lesion are an area of tissue that has been damaged through injury or disease. So a brain lesion is an area of injury or disease within the brain. While the definition sounds simple, understanding brain lesions can be complicated. That's because there are many types of brain lesions. They can range from small to large, from few to many, from relatively harmless to life-threatening.
Tumors are clumps of cells that grow abnormally from normal tissue. Some tumors in the brain are noncancerous, or benign. Others are cancerous. They may start in the brain, or they may spread from elsewhere in the body (metastatic). They may grow quickly or they may remain stable.
